The Dodge City office has begun its 6th year of the Teen Moms Program. There are nine students enrolled this year with more applications coming in! The year started on September 17, 2008 with the annual kick-off picnic. The students brought their children and families and fun was had by all! The picnic is used as an ice breaker for the previous year’s students to meet and get to know the new students. Some of the Discovery Workshops held so far include Group Opening Night, College Night and Choices and Kansas Works. The students had these things to say about the workshops: “I really enjoy coming to teen moms. I really look forward to it each week.” “It’s good to be back.” “I enjoyed getting to know everyone and talking.” “I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.”
The program is fortunate to have a prayer guardian and mentors this year as well. Our prayer guardian is Barbie Flax from Dodge City. Barbie’s role is to pray for any needs the students have each week as well as for any program or agency needs. The students have really embraced this aspect of the program and many of them look forward to writing their prayer card each week and submitting it. Two of the students have been matched with mentors so far this semester. This is a new addition to the program this year and we are very excited about it! Information is going out to several others interested in mentoring as well. We hope to have a mentor for each student very soon! We are also excited about being able to begin the Teen Moms Program in Great Bend this year! An informational meeting was held in September and the referrals are starting to come in! We hope to start our first Discovery Workshop sometime in November. If you are interested in becoming involved with the Teen Moms Program (student, mentor, meals provider, teacher or donor) please contact Amy Falcon or Terry Leos in the Dodge City office at 620-227-1562 or Annette Schremmer in the Great Bend office at 620-792-1393. |
