As we continue along the magnificent journey with Hattie Stein we will find that today, Monday, October 20, 2008,  Hattie along with her fellow delegates will meet with staff from the House of Hope on a Hill Rehabilitation Center.  The Mission of this Center is helping Russian alcoholics aspiring to find sobriety.  The center has concentrated efforts on helping known people of Russia suffering from this disease.  The center can accommodate up to 30 patients in their three different programs they offer which are the Initial Program, the Family Program and the Relapse Program.  All patients receive absolutely free-of-charge care, irrespective of a sex, age or creed.  The delegates will focus the morning on the recommended length of stay, the elements of a successful treatment program and the importance of prevention.

The afternoon will consist of exploring the Our Savior on the Spilled Blood Cathedral.  This masterpiece of architecture was built in 1863 on the site where 63-year-old Emperor Alexander II was mortally wounded by a terrorist who exploded a handmade bomb under his carriage.  They will also visit the Peter and Paul Fortress, one of the crowning jewels of St. Petersburg history.  It is also the resting place of the remains of the last tsar and his family.

Tuesday. October 21, 2008, begins a new day starting at the St. Petersburg Municipal Narcological Hospital.  St. Petersburg Municipal Narcological Hospital was founded in 1976 with an objective to provide professional medical and social assistance as well as to address addiction related problems of St. Petersburg residents.  It was born due to the reorganization and merging of the two hospitals - psychiatric and psychoneurological.  All 8 departments of the hospital today are open to the patients.  Its inpatient clinic specialists deliver detox of the addicted, conduct lab tests, physiotherapy, psychotherapy and clinical psychology treatment, substance abuse counseling and recovery services.  The delegates will focus on the use of pharmaceuticals in treating cravings and withdrawal, America's recovery movement and Recovery Month.

For the afternoon they will enjoy the impressive exhibits of the world's greatest art galleries, the Hermitage Museum.  The museum was founded by Catherine II as a home for her art collection and a retreat connected to her private apartments, the Winter Palace.  From the 1760s onwards, the Winter Palace was the main residence of the Russian Tsars.  It is magnificently located on the bank of the Neva River.

Wedneday, October 22, 2008, they will finalize their stay in Russia finishing with whatever last minute pursuits or shopping they have.  They will meet in the lobby of the hotel at 12:30 p.m. load the motor coach and ride to St. Petersburg airport where they will then board and depart for Warsaw, Poland.

Continue visiting our Message Board for updates from Hattie as we continue this aspiring journey with her.
